As Innovation Director at Merseyway Innovation Centre, I’ve seen firsthand how the strongest ideas and partnerships spring from genuine human connection. Here are a few of my go-to tips for making (and keeping) those all-important connections:
Be Intentional, Not Transactional
Before you reach out, ask yourself: “What shared goals or interests do we have?” Lead with how you can help, not what you need. Authenticity builds trust and trust drives collaboration.
Show Up Consistently
Whether it’s our monthly Merseyway meet-ups, virtual coffee chats, or industry webinars, carve out time each week to connect. Consistency turns fleeting hellos into meaningful relationships.
Listen Twice as Much as You Talk
Deep listening uncovers needs, pain points, and passions you might otherwise miss. Ask open questions, take notes, and follow up on the details – people remember when you truly listen.
Cultivate Your “Weak Ties”
Your second- and third-degree connections are gold mines for fresh perspectives. Don’t be afraid to ask for an introduction – and be ready to pay it forward yourself.
Nurture, Don’t Neglect
A one-off coffee is just the beginning. Send occasional resources, industry insights, or a simple “thinking of you” note. Small gestures keep you top of mind.
Bring Value to Every Interaction
Share relevant articles, invite contacts to events at Merseyway, spotlight their wins on LinkedIn, or connect them with someone in your network – value begets value.
If you’re in Stockport and curious about how the Merseyway community can help you grow your business or research, let’s connect.
